Surprise! Kids are Reading (Duh)

Just something quick for you today. All you authors out there, but especially we kidlit authors, will be glad to hear: kids read.

Haha, I know. Obvious right? But according to this story, on NPR's Morning Edition today, kids are reading more than adults. And that's great news, isn't it?

Seriously, check the story out. It's not even a full story, really, just a quick bit about books and readers. The audio won't be available until 9 AM, but you can read the transcript at that link, above.

I'm not surprised that kids are reading, really. What surprised me is what they had to say about e-books. I thought my daughters, who don't like e-books, were at the far end of the curve. Thanks for sharing.

That is good news!

Well, *my* kids read more than me, all the time, but that's a bit of a skewed sample, there.

That is good news. Though I'm not sure when high school kids have time with their busy school schedule, homework, sports, and other activities. Seems like high school should lighten up a bit so they can read more for enjoyment.

My teen is definitely reading less fiction and more textbooks, but my pre-teen reads a lot.

Awesome - I know the kids in my class always love to read :)

I know several kids and pre-teens, who can't get their hands on books fast enough. Hopefully, they keep it up ;)

I'm a middle school teacher, and I've always felt the talk about the demise of reading was off. I see lots of kids reading, even the boys these days.

That's good to hear. Kids are the future, so the future looks a little brighter.

Wait...I'm supposed to be teaching my kids to read for themselves? So THAT'S what I've been doing wrong.

It's up to parents to instill that love of reading in their children at a very young age. I know I did. I just wish my parents had done that for me. I missed a lot as a child.

Fantastic news!

Thanks to JK Rowling. She started kids and adults to read again... Glad to see the next generation is keeping it up!

That's because adults are watching Honey Boo Boo, Desperate House Wives, The Voice, and Dancing with the Stars.

I think NPR got this wrong anyway.

To separate kids and adults is stupid. In America, people that are 34 are still acting like kids.

So they should have done it by age groups. People over 40 have generally become "adults" by this time. Although I still know some guys that haven't grown up by that age.

I've never gone through a reading slump phase. I do think parenting and the lifestyle in the household are the biggest factors that determine reading frequency and depth. My mother read Shakespeare out loud while she breast fed us, and that was how life is. I absolutely agree that many adults waste time on TV and then say they don't have time to read. It's all about lifestyle.

I just feel like this has always been the case, but what the hell do i know?

Kids are probably smarter, too. I know mine are.

Now if we can just keep them reading once they're adults.
